These crowns are fixed on to the implants one day after the implants are placed, and the they can not be removed my the patient. These temporary crowns, which remain in the mouth until the implants is integrated with the bone, have aesthetic purposes rather than being functional. High pressure must not be placed on the implants until the osseointegration is achieved. After that, permanent crowns are placed instead of the temporary ones.
Local anesthesia that causes numbness is usually applied during root canal treatment. Because of this numbness, the patient may bite and damage his/her soft tissues such as tongue, lips and cheeks. Extremely cold-hot beverages should be avoided at the same time, which can damage soft tissues.
Nutrition in the first 1.5 months
Eat only soft food in the first 1.5 months. When you are using temporary fixed crowns, do not forget that implants and the jaw bone are not integrated yet. For this reason, you can east soft food listed below in the first 1.5 months.
Soft food: all liquids, soup, yogurt, pasta, egg, rice, wet crumb, boiled vegetables, pudding, etc.
Semi solid food: All kinds of meat and vegetable meals cooked in water, tomato, soft apple, grilled chicken, peanuts, chocolate, etc.
Solid food: quince, green apple, white chickpeas, chocolate taken from the fridge, hard bread crust, well-cooked hard-fiber meat, etc.
After first 1.5 months, you can step by step start eating semi solid food. After 3 months, you can easily eat semi solid food. Actually, you can also eat solid food after 3 months, but it is still risky as it may break the temporary prosthesis. If you start eating solid food before the recommended time, this may cause the loss of your implants.
You may get used to your temporary prosthesis and can meet your daily needs with it. Bu don’t forget that it can be easily broken and damage your teeth. It is extremely important for your dental health to make the permanent prosthesis fixed within the time period stated by your dentist.
Brush your teeth with electronic or manual toothbrush twice a day. You can use mouthwash (eg. Listerine). Trying to clean your teeth with toothpicks may cause your crown to come out. Instead you can use dental floss. Do not push too hard if it is difficult for dental floss to get between two teeth. One of the best ways to clear your teeth is to use a dental water flosser (eg. Oral-b oxyjet). These devices pressurize the water and air between the teeth.
Remember that temporary crowns are usually made from acrylic (plastic) and are not very solid. If they are broken, imbalanced stress may be applied on the implants and this may cause the loss of them. In case of a fracture, consume only food that does not require chewing such as soup and pudding. Don’t even eat soft food except these. Please contact your dental surgeon as soon as possible.
During treatment sessions, the temporary prostheses are not fixed with a very strong adhesive so that they can be removed and placed several times. This means that your temporary prosthesis may dislocate. In that case, you can visit our clinic without an appointment. If you are not in Istanbul, you can visit a nearby dentist.
It is normal to feel uncomfortable for a while after the prosthesis is newly fixed. Temporary prostheses are generally not as good as permanent prostheses, and some rough areas can be found. Every new substance that is put in your mouth (even a filling) will cause some disturbance for the soft tissues and tongue. In about a week, your tongue will get used to the new prosthesis. If there is a rough and jaggy edge / surface that hurts your tongue, try not to touch the area with your tongue and visit our clinic as soon as possible. The problem can be solved with a little abrasion and / or polishing process.
This is usually felt if the prosthesis is high. It is because of the fact that the prosthesis contacts before your natural teeth. As the stress in the mouth will concentrate on a single point, pain will occur in that region. In that case, you should immediately consult your dentist. Until the problem is fixed, try to eat soft food.
Due to the loosening of the temporary prostheses, problems on your gums may develop. Implants can cause as a result of early extra stress put on them. Eat soft foods and contact your dentist as soon as possible.
As implants do not feel hot or cold, you are not supposed to have a sensitivity problem. If you have temporary crowns on your natural teeth other than the implants, this may be the source of such sensitivity. Temporary prosthesis are not fixed like the permanent ones and thus, sometimes some sort of leakage may occur and cause tingling. The gap between the prosthesis and the gum can cause cold / hot sensitivity. Such sensitivities will disappear after the permanent prosthesis is located and fixed with the original adhesive. If you have cold / hot sensitivity, you should avoid too cold or too hot food and drinks.
